RESOLUTION
Relating to the death of the Honorable Nancy Kassebaum, former United
States Senator for the State of Kansas.
Whereas Nancy Kassebaum was born in Topeka, Kansas;
Whereas Nancy Kassebaum began her lifetime of public service as a member of the
Kansas Governmental Ethics Commission and Kansas Committee on the
Humanities, as well as the local school board in Maize, Kansas;
Whereas Nancy Kassebaum advocated on behalf of Kansans as a constituent services
staff member for Senator James Pearson from 1975 to 1976;
Whereas Nancy Kassebaum began her United States Senate career in 1978, which
would last until 1997, serving during this period as Chairman of the of
the Committee on Labor and Human Resources (now known as the Committee
on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions);
Whereas Nancy Kassebaum introduced the bipartisan Senate legislation that became
the foundation of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability
Act (Public Law 104-191; 42 U.S.C. 201 note), which established Federal
protections for patients' medical information;
Whereas Nancy Kassebaum was the only woman serving in the United States Senate
at the time of her election;
Whereas Nancy Kassebaum was recognized for her public service by President
Joseph Biden and was awarded the Presidential Citizens Medal in 2025;
and
Whereas Nancy Kassebaum exemplified the American spirit of service and
leadership: Now, therefore, be it
Resolved, That--
(1) the Senate--
(A) has heard with profound sorrow and deep regret
the announcement of the death of the Honorable Nancy
Kassebaum, former United States Senator for the State
of Kansas;
(B) respectfully requests that the Secretary of the
Senate--
(i) communicate this resolution to the
House of Representatives; and
(ii) transmit an enrolled copy of this
resolution to the family of the Honorable Nancy
Kassebaum; and
(2) when the Senate adjourns today, it stands adjourned as
a further mark of respect to the memory of the Honorable Nancy
Kassebaum.
