Plain-English Summary

This resolution would officially recognize May 2026 as a month dedicated to raising awareness about necrotizing fasciitis, a rare but serious bacterial infection that can spread rapidly through tissue. The designation would encourage public education and discussion about this life-threatening condition, which can affect anyone but requires immediate medical attention and treatment. Healthcare providers, patients, and advocacy groups would use this month to inform the public about symptoms, prevention, and the importance of early diagnosis.

[Congressional Bills 119th Congress] [From the U.S. Government Publishing Office] [H. Res. 1311 Introduced in House (IH)] <DOC> 119th CONGRESS 2d Session H. RES. 1311 Expressing support for the designation of May 2026 as ``Necrotizing Fasciitis Awareness Month''. _______________________________________________________________________ IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES May 21, 2026 Mr. Harder of California submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the Committee on Energy and Commerce _______________________________________________________________________ RESOLUTION Expressing support for the designation of May 2026 as ``Necrotizing Fasciitis Awareness Month''. Whereas necrotizing fasciitis is a rare but severe bacterial infection that spreads rapidly in the body's soft tissue and can lead to significant morbidity and mortality if not treated promptly; Whereas necrotizing fasciitis is often caused by bacteria, such as Group A Streptococcus, though other pathogens may also be responsible; Whereas early symptoms may include redness, swelling, fever, and severe pain; Whereas the infection can progress quickly to tissue destruction, systemic illness, and death; Whereas prompt diagnosis and immediate medical intervention, including antibiotics and surgical treatment, are critical to improving patient outcomes; Whereas increased awareness among the public and health care providers can lead to earlier recognition, faster treatment, and improved survival rates; Whereas survivors of necrotizing fasciitis often face long-term physical and emotional challenges, including recovery from extensive surgeries and rehabilitation; Whereas advocacy organizations, health care professionals, and survivors work to educate the public about the risks, symptoms, and prevention of necrotizing fasciitis; and Whereas designating a month for awareness would help promote education, encourage early detection, and support affected individuals and families: Now, therefore, be it Resolved, That the House of Representatives-- (1) supports the designation of ``Necrotizing Fasciitis Awareness Month''; (2) encourages Federal, State, and local agencies, health care providers, and community organizations to promote awareness of necrotizing fasciitis; (3) urges increased public education on the early signs and symptoms of necrotizing fasciitis to improve timely diagnosis and treatment; and (4) expresses support for patients, survivors, families, and caregivers affected by necrotizing fasciitis. <all>
