Haridopolos Hosts Special Order on Housing Affordability Haridopolos Hosts Special Order on Housing Affordability Kaley.Stidham@… Mon, 02/09/2026 - 22:30 WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congressman Mike Haridopolos (FL-08) hosted a Special Order on the House floor to address the nationwide housing shortage. The United States is currently short by as many as 5.5 million housing units, a gap driven by rising construction costs, regulatory delays, outdated zoning rules, barriers to community bank lending, and increased demand placing additional pressure on housing supply. That’s why House Republicans are advancing a pro-growth housing agenda, including the Housing for the 21st Century Act , which focuses on expanding housing supply, modernizing federal housing programs, and strengthening community banks’ ability to finance new construction. “We are not facing a housing affordability crisis because Americans stopped working hard. We are facing it because, nationwide, we stopped building enough homes,” said Congressman Haridopolos. “That shortage has been made worse by the surge of illegal immigration during the Biden administration, which has increased demand for housing faster than supply can keep up. We cannot regulate our way out of this problem. We have to build our way out of it by cutting red tape, modernizing outdated programs, and making sure community banks can lend locally so families have more affordable housing options.” Watch the Special Order here . ### Congress Number 119th Congress February 9, 2026 Press Release February 10, 2026
