HONORING FIRST BETHLEHEM BAPTIST CHURCH Congressional Record, Volume 172 Issue 158 (Tuesday, October 6, 2026) [Congressional Record Volume 172, Number 158 (Tuesday, October 6, 2026)] [Extensions of Remarks] [Page E1042] From the Congressional Record Online through the Government Publishing Office [ www.gpo.gov ] HONORING FIRST BETHLEHEM BAPTIST CHURCH ______ HON. CLEO FIELDS of louisiana in the house of representatives Tuesday, October 6, 2026 Mr. FIELDS. Mr. Speaker, I rise today to honor First Bethlehem Baptist Church of Alexandria, Louisiana, a longstanding and beloved institution in the local community. Founded in 1875, this historic church has played a vital role in the spiritual and social life of its members for more than 150 years. Situated in the heart of Alexandria, the church is a beacon of faith and hope for its congregation and the surrounding area. The church's rich history is rooted in the African-American community of Rapides Parish. From its humble beginnings as a small gathering of worshippers to its present-day status as a thriving congregation. First Bethlehem has weathered many challenges and triumphs, and through it all, it has remained steadfast in its commitment to serving God and ministering to the needs of its members. That unbroken history of service, stretching across more than a century and a half of change, is the foundation on which the church stands today. Over the years, First Bethlehem has expanded its outreach to include a wide range of programs and services designed to benefit the community at large. From youth ministries to senior programs, the church offers something for people of every age and background, caring for the youngest members of the congregation and honoring its elders alike. In addition to regular worship services, the church hosts community events, Bible studies, and social gatherings that bring people together in fellowship and unity, making the church a place where neighbors meet, families connect, and the bonds of community are strengthened. The leadership of First Bethlehem is dedicated to guiding and shepherding the congregation with wisdom and compassion. Under the guidance of Pastor John Smith, the church has grown and thrived, continuing to spread the message of God's love and grace to all who enter its doors. Pastor Smith's vision for the church is one of inclusion, diversity, and empowerment, as he leads the congregation in worship, service, and outreach. First Bethlehem's historic building and steeple are central landmarks in the Alexandria community, a symbol of faith and hope to all who pass by. Its choir and worship team lead powerful and uplifting services that inspire all who attend, and the church welcomes both long-time members and newcomers seeking spiritual guidance. The impact of First Bethlehem extends well beyond its own membership. As one of the longstanding congregations of Alexandria, and one with deep roots in the African-American community, it contributes to the strength of the broader faith community, standing alongside other churches in the shared work of nurturing faith, supporting families, and serving neighbors in need. Its example of steady, faithful service through good times and hard times continues to inspire those who worship there and those who look to it as a model of what a committed congregation can accomplish. Mr. Speaker, I ask my colleagues to join me in celebrating First Bethlehem Baptist Church, Pastor John Smith, and the dedicated congregation for more than 150 years of faith, service, and fellowship to the Alexandria community. May First Bethlehem continue to be a pillar of strength and a light of hope in Alexandria for generations to come. ____________________
