Carter vote secures aviation safety training tool for Savannah airport

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Department of Transportation (DOT) awarded $7.6 million to replace the current air traffic control training system at the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV), increasing safety, reducing delays, and modernizing air travel. Rep. Earl L. “Buddy” Carter (R-GA) voted in favor of this funding as part of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Reauthorization Act of 2024. The funding supports the Brand-New Air Traffic Control System (BNATCS) Retrofit of Tower Simulation Systems (TSS) to SAV. TSS is a high-fidelity, computer-based, and immersive training tool used by the FAA to train Air Traffic Controllers in a safe, simulated environment. These systems feature 360-degree views, realistic airport layouts, and variable weather conditions, reducing controller certification time by up to 30%, increasing safety and efficiency at major airports. “The Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport had a record-breaking year in 2025, welcoming more than 4.2 million passengers from across the country and around the world. While we love bringing visitors to the Hostess City of the South, that growth comes with the responsibility to maintain the highest standards of aviation safety and efficiency,” said Rep.
