Representatives McBath, Williams Celebrate Accomplishments of Black Aviators on Fifth Black Aviation Professionals Day

Atlanta, GA - Today, Representatives Lucy McBath (GA-06) and Nikema Williams (GA-05) celebrated Black excellence in the field of aviation on the fifth International Black Aviation Professionals Day. Black aviators - including pilots, air traffic controllers, skycaps, flight attendants, ground crew members, and more - have been and continue to be instrumental to the success of the aviation industry, overcoming significant adversity. McBath and Williams introduced a resolution to designate February 16th as International Black Aviation Professionals Day. Similar legislation was introduced in the 117th and 118th Congress. "Georgia has long been home to trailblazers who helped shape aviation and aerospace, even when their contributions went unrecognized," said Rep. McBath. "International Black Aviation Professionals Day is about amplifying the voices of Black professionals whose innovation, leadership, and perseverance have strengthened our workforce and expanded opportunity for generations. By honoring their legacy, we inspire the next generation of leaders to see themselves in every part of the aviation industry." "Thanks to the groundbreaking achievements of Black Georgians in aviation, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport stands today as the world's busiest and most efficient airport. It's long past time we honor those Black pioneers and the aviation professionals who continue their legacy with a dedicated day of recognition during Black History Month. I am proud to usher in this day of recognition and remembrance alongside my colleague, Congresswoman McBath," said Rep. Williams. Casey Grant, the originator of International Black Aviation Professionals Day, said: "This national recognition is vital to restoring these Black heroes of aviation to their rightful place. I thank Rep. Williams and her co-sponsors for their leadership in telling the full story of American aviation." Click here for text of the resolution.
