An applicant for a nomination must meet the following eligibility requirements as of July 1 of the year of admission to a service academy: At least 17 years old but younger than 23 years old United States citizen Unmarried Not pregnant Have no legal obligation to support children or other dependents Applying Through Congressman Taylor's Office Congressman Dave Taylor's office is accepting nomination applications from residents of Ohio's Second Congressional District who are interested in attending one of the United States military academies. Nominations will be made to: Air Force Academy Naval Academy U.S. Military Academy (West Point) Merchant Marine Academy Important Note: Beyond applying for a nomination through Congressman Taylor's office, students must begin the application process with services academies themselves. Service Academies The United States has five Service Academies: United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) United States Naval Academy (USNA) United States Military Academy (USMA) United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) Nominations are required for all academies except the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, to which appointments are made on the basis of an annual nationwide competition. For the USAFA, USNA, and USMA, there are various nomination authorities. Each eligible young person can apply to: Both United States Senators from the applicant's state His or her United States Representative The Vice President (if exceptionally qualified) Other Nominations The other nomination categories are military-affiliated. For the Congressional category, each Representative and each Senator is allowed to fill five slots at each academy. For each vacancy, ten nominations may be made on a competitive basis. Nominees will compete among themselves for final appointment, which is ultimately determined by the admissions authorities. Academies take into consideration: Academic record Extracurricular and athletic activities Physical aptitude ACT and/or SAT scores Leadership ability Medical qualifications A candidate's offer of admission is dependent on whether he or she meets the physical standards of the academy with the exception of a medical waiver. Recommendation: All interested candidates should apply through all sources for which they are eligible and for all academies in which they have a genuine interest. An individual may be nominated by more than one nominating authority and/or to more than one academy. Note for U.S. Merchant Marine Academy: The locality boundary for nomination by a Representative is the State in which the District lies rather than just the District itself. <div class="academy-lin
