REPS. CARLOS A. GIMENEZ AND ROBERT GARCIA INTRODUCE BIPARTISAN RESOLUTION COMMEMORATING 200 YEARS OF OFFICIAL U.S.-PERU RELATIONS

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congressmen Carlos Gimenez (R-FL) and Robert Garcia (D-CA), Co-Chairs of the Congressional Caucus on Peru, introduced a bipartisan resolution commemorating 200 years of official diplomatic relations between the United States and the Republic of Peru. The resolution recognizes two centuries of enduring friendship, shared values, and expanding cooperation between the United States and Peru since the establishment of formal diplomatic ties in 1826 - one of the earliest such relationships between the United States and a South American nation. As Co-Chairs of the Congressional Caucus on Peru, Representatives Gimenez and Garcia have worked to strengthen congressional engagement with Peru and to advance a forward-looking bilateral partnership rooted in democratic governance, economic opportunity, and regional security. Congressman Carlos A. Gimenez said, " Our partnership with Peru is not just symbolic, it is strategic and rooted in shared values, mutual interests, and a clear commitment to democracy and the rule of law. Together, our nations are tackling the most pressing challenges of our time, from transnational crime to strengthening resilient supply chains across the hemisphere. As we mark this bicentennial milestone, we have a real opportunity to deepen and modernize this alliance with a trusted partner, and to advance stability, security, and prosperity in our region. " " As the first Peruvian-American elected to Congress, I'm proud of the 200 years of friendship that we have built between our country and Peru ," said Congressman Robert Garcia . " The American-Peruvian community has contributed so much to this country and that deserves to be recognized. I'm proud to recognize this important milestone and continue building on our partnership. " The Embassy of Peru in the United States welcomed the introduction of the resolution, noting that it reflects broad bipartisan support in Congress for a strategic and forward-looking U.S.-Peru partnership.
