Julia Letlow to ensure retirement security for teachers, police officers, and other public servants has been signed into law. The Social Security Fairness Act would eliminate the unfair, bureaucratic Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO), which reduce earned retirement benefits for millions of public servants across the country. WEP and GPO provisions currently prevent over 2 million Americans and many Louisianans from retiring with their full Social Security benefits. “Our state and local employees work tirelessly to educate our students, respond to emergencies, protect public safety and more. After years of effort, I'm thrilled to see our legislation signed into law to eliminate harmful provisions that threaten these public servants' earned Social Security benefits,” said Congresswoman Julia Letlow. “This is a milestone moment in the fight to ensure retirement security for all of Louisiana's public servants.” H.R. 82 was passed on a bipartisan basis by the House of Representatives on November 12 and the U.S. Senate on December 21. Letlow has led on the issue during her time in Congress, including sharing stories from constituents affected by the provisions before the powerful House Ways & Means Committee .
