Sen. Moran Statement on Senate Farm Bill Discussion Draft

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) - a member of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry - today issued the following statement regarding the Senate Farm Bill discussion draft: "The Senate discussion draft of the Farm Bill includes many worthwhile priorities that support America's farmers and ranchers and strengthen our rural communities. However, this draft does not include my legislation to permanently transfer the administration of Food for Peace to USDA - an important step that would benefit American farmers and support valuable markets for U.S. agricultural commodities. This program is temporarily being administered by USDA, and the permanent transfer will ensure the program's long-term stability and continued success. The House-passed version of the Farm Bill includes this provision, and the Senate Agriculture Committee should not advance this legislation until this omission is resolved." Additional background: Last year, Sen. Moran introduced legislation with Sen. Hoeven and Rep. Mann to move Food for Peace to USDA permanently. A similar provision was included in the Farm Bill that was approved by the U.S. House of Representatives. Earlier this month, Sen. Moran questioned USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins on maintaining administration of the program at USDA and highlighted 400,000 bushels of Kansas grain sorghum recently loaded in Hugoton, Kansas, to be used for Food for Peace. On June 3rd: Sen. Moran questioned Secretary of State Marco Rubio on transfer of Food for Peace from the Department of State. # # #
