Rep. Haridopolos Advances Housing Affordability Agenda on Financial Services Committee Rep. Haridopolos Advances Housing Affordability Agenda on Financial Services Committee Kaley.Stidham@… Fri, 02/13/2026 - 13:10 WASHINGTON, D.C. — This week, Congressman Mike Haridopolos (FL-08) continued his work on the House Financial Services Committee to address the nation’s housing affordability crisis by advancing a pro-growth agenda focused on increasing supply, restoring accountability, and lowering costs for families. On the House Floor, Haridopolos hosted a Special Order highlighting the scale of the nationwide housing shortage. The United States is currently short an estimated 5.5 million housing units, a gap driven by rising construction costs, regulatory delays, outdated zoning rules, barriers to community bank lending, and increased demand placing additional pressure on housing supply. As part of this effort, Haridopolos voted in favor of the Housing for the 21st Century Act, a pro-growth bill aimed at expanding housing supply, modernizing federal housing programs, and strengthening community banks’ ability to finance new construction. During committee hearings, Haridopolos examined the rising cost of housing and borrowing, emphasizing that affordability cannot be restored by attempting to force prices back down to pre-inflation levels. Instead, he stressed the importance of sustained economic growth, rising real wages, and policies that support homebuilding while keeping borrowing costs in check. He also raised concerns about accountability and transparency within federal housing programs, underscoring the need for stronger oversight to ensure taxpayer dollars are spent responsibly while residents are protected. “At the end of the day, Congress has a responsibility to make sure housing programs are built on integrity and accountability—not just more paperwork,” said Congressman Haridopolos. “Taxpayer dollars should be helping families find safe, affordable housing, not enabling bad actors or rewarding mismanagement.” Watch the Special Order here .
