Connecting Nebraskans to Opportunity

Hearing directly from Nebraskans and seeing the challenges facing our communities firsthand helps me better advocate for our state in Washington. That's why I spend much of my time traveling Nebraska and meeting folks in their communities. During a recent visit, I joined the Metropolitan Area Planning Agency (MAPA) for a roundtable discussion on transportation and infrastructure needs in eastern Nebraska. MAPA works with communities in Douglas, Sarpy, Washington, and Cass counties, as well as several communities across the river in Iowa. The agency helps local governments plan for long-term challenges involving transportation, infrastructure, housing, and natural resources. Local leaders know their communities' needs best. Their insights are invaluable as I work to secure federal investments in Nebraska's roads, bridges, railways, water infrastructure, and airports through my role on the Senate Appropriations and Commerce Committees. As Congress works on the Surface Transportation Reauthorization Act , I am also pushing to ensure Nebraska's priorities are reflected in the legislation. These include strengthening our freight network, addressing permitting challenges, and repairing and rebuilding highways and bridges across our state. Infrastructure was also a topic of discussion during my meeting with the Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce. I enjoyed visiting with the chamber's impressive team of young women leaders about the region's growing economy and opportunities for continued development. Columbus has made tremendous strides in attracting quality jobs and expanding economic opportunities for its residents. I was encouraged by the community's momentum and look forward to seeing its continued progress. Another highlight of my time in Columbus was a visit to Central Community College, where I met with their leadership to discuss the college's student support services, transfer pathways, industry partnerships, and strategic initiatives. Columbus is just one of their seven campuses serving 25 counties in central Nebraska. I have long been impressed by their faculty and staff's commitment to helping students prepare for success in the classroom and beyond. From improving our transportation networks to expanding career opportunities and investing in the next generation, Nebraska communities are working hard to build a stronger future. These visits remind me why it is so important to spend time on the ground, listening to the people I represent. I am grateful to the local leaders, educators, and community members who shared their perspectives with me. Their input helps ensure Nebraska's priorities have a voice in Washington. Thank you for participating in the democratic process. I look forward to visiting with you again next week.
