Congressional Record, Volume 172 Issue 146 (Wednesday, September 16, 2026) [Congressional Record Volume 172, Number 146 (Wednesday, September 16, 2026)] [Extensions of Remarks] [Page E942] From the Congressional Record Online through the Government Publishing Office [ www.gpo.gov ] HONORING THE LIFE AND CAREER OF SHERIFF TOM SPANGLER ______ HON. TIM BURCHETT of tennessee in the house of representatives Wednesday, September 16, 2026 Mr. BURCHETT. Mr. Speaker, today I rise to honor the life and career of former Knox County Sheriff Tom ``Spanky'' Spangler. A native of Knox County, Sheriff Spangler dedicated his entire life to public service. After following in his father's footsteps and joining the United States Air Force, Sheriff Spangler returned to Knox County in 1980 and joined the Sheriff's Office. During his career on the force, he held several positions from patrol officer to heading the narcotics division. On top of this, Sheriff Spangler earned his diploma from the FBI National Academy and started the Knox County Sheriff's aviation program. He also held certifications for operating both helicopters and fixed-wing planes. Following his retirement in 2009, Sheriff Spangler stayed active in the community as a member of the Clear Springs Baptist Church in Corryton. However, it was not long before he got back into service, being asked to serve as the Assistant Chief of Training for the Blount County Sheriff's Office. So, it was no surprise to anyone when he was easily elected twice, both in 2018 and 2022, as Knox County Sheriff. Tom is survived by his wife, Linda, their two daughters and sons-in- law, and multiple grandchildren. He will be remembered for his life- long commitment to law enforcement and unwavering support for East Tennessee. ____________________
