Marking Juneteenth

Marking Juneteenth This is Congresswoman Nellie Pou writing to on our Juneteenth national holiday. Today, June 19, marks the anniversary of the day in 1865 when news of emancipation finally reached enslaved Americans in Galveston, Texas, more than two years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. That history reminds us of an important truth: freedom is not only something declared. It must also be delivered. Rights promised must become rights experienced.
