KARK: Farm Bill 2.0 Sponsored by Arkansas Senator John Boozman Advances in Senate

LITTLE ROCK - A major overhaul of the nation's farm programs is moving forward after the Senate Agriculture Committee approved Farm Bill 2.0 in a party-line vote. Arkansas Senator John Boozman, chairman of the committee, helped lead the legislation. Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell returned to the Senate to cast the deciding vote. The five-year proposal would strengthen crop insurance and other risk-management programs, expand conservation and specialty crop assistance, and provide more funding to help farmers sell products overseas. It also includes investments in rural broadband, drinking water, food processing and health care, along with year-round E15 sales. Democrats opposed the bill over a provision requiring states to help cover some SNAP costs. They argued states need more time to reduce SNAP error rates. The bill now heads toward a vote by the full Senate. If approved, lawmakers would still have to reconcile it with the House version before it could reach the president.
