WASHINGTON, D.C.—June 11, 2026… Congressman Steve Womack (AR-3) today released the following statement after Democrats blocked the passage of H.R. 9238 to extend the authorities of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) through July 2, 2026. FISA Section 702 authorities expire on June 12, 2026. Congressman Womack said, “It is unconscionable that lawmakers would choose to let such a critical tool of the U.S. intelligence community lapse when we are in the midst of a conflict overseas, preparing to host foreign nationals for the World Cup, and on the cusp of our 250th birthday celebration. Our adversaries around the world who are plotting to do harm to our nation and citizens are celebrating, and I pray we do not reap the consequences that these nefarious actors believe we deserve. Congress must put aside their spiteful and extraneous disputes and restore FISA Section 702 authorities expeditiously—our national security counts on it.” Section 702 allows the U.S. government to collect the electronic communications of foreign nationals overseas who raise reasonable intelligence concerns.
