Shutdown exposes what has gone wrong in Washington Shutdown exposes what has gone wrong in Washington Dedicated federal workers have now been furloughed or forced to work without pay for 40 days. I hoped this shutdown wouldn’t last more than a week. I expected more from my Democratic colleagues and couldn’t imagine they could justify holding the American people hostage for this long. The first missed paychecks are beginning to hit home for civil servants. At this time, I think it’s important to step back and understand how we got here and why the American people are paying the price for Washington’s dysfunction.
