Congressman Crenshaw Advocates an America-First Strategy Ahead of Global Plastics Treaty Talks

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Dan Crenshaw (TX-02) is spearheading a letter, joined by House Republican colleagues, to Secretary of State Marco Rubio supporting the Trump Administration's efforts to assert strong American leadership in the upcoming United Nations Global Plastics Treaty negotiations in Geneva. Crenshaw had previously led a congressional letter to then-Secretary of State Anthony Blinken last fall when the Biden administration supported production caps during prior treaty talks, which would harm American economic interests. This new letter supports efforts for a science-driven, economically sound treaty that puts American interests first. Under President Trump's January 20th Executive Order, "Putting America First in International Environmental Agreements," the United States has a critical opportunity to reverse the previous administration's embrace of overzealous international environmental mandates that undermined American industry. Instead, the U.S. can lead negotiations toward an agreement that supports domestic manufacturing, fosters innovation, and protects U.S. competitiveness. "With President Trump's leadership, the U.S. has an opportunity to undo the damage of the Biden-Harris era and restore common sense to environmental policy and plastic production supply chains," said Congressman Crenshaw . "Plastic production is essential to our economy, national defense, and modern life. Rather than capping U.S. production and outsourcing pollution to China, we should lead with technological advancements in recycling, an innovative mindset that advances human flourishing, and a strategy that strengthens American industry while responsibly conserving the environment." The U.S. plastics industry supports over one million jobs and contributes more than $500 billion to the economy annually. It also generates hundreds of billions in tax revenue, powering local and national infrastructure. U.S.-produced plastics are cleaner and more environmentally responsible than imports from countries like China, which rely on dirtier processes and lax environmental standards. "The Biden administration's climate radicalism threatened to cripple an industry vital to everything from medical technology to military readiness," Crenshaw added . "We're supporting the Trump administration's efforts to negotiate a treaty that reflects American values - leadership, innovation, and economic strength."
