WHAT HAPPENED TO PATRICK FINUCANE

Congressional Record, Volume 172 Issue 146 (Wednesday, September 16, 2026) [Congressional Record Volume 172, Number 146 (Wednesday, September 16, 2026)] [House] [Pages H5835-H5836] From the Congressional Record Online through the Government Publishing Office [ www.gpo.gov ] WHAT HAPPENED TO PATRICK FINUCANE (Mr. NEAL asked and was given permission to address the House for 1 minute and to revise and extend his remarks.) Mr. NEAL. Mr. Speaker, today, in Belfast in the north of Ireland, there is a murder inquiry that is underway. For those of us who have had a longstanding interest in this issue, this is an opportunity to shine light on what happened to the solicitor Patrick Finucane. He was brutally murdered during a Sunday dinner in his dining room. The question is, as he was murdered in [[Page H5836]] front of his wife, Geraldine, and their children, what happened with collusion with British forces at the time? The British Government has time and again said that they would honor a full inquiry into the murder of Patrick Finucane. Decades have gone by while we await that judgment and that scrutiny of what really happened on that fateful day. The Good Friday Agreement brought to an end decades, if not centuries, of antagonism between two traditions, but getting to the bottom of what happened to Patrick Finucane should be part of what we do here in America to scrutinize what we had done to successfully bring about the Good Friday Agreement. ____________________
