Chairwoman McClain Honored as Ship Sponsor for USNS Lansing

MOBILE, Ala. - Today, during a christening ceremony, House Republican Conference Chairwoman Lisa McClain (R-Mich.) was designated as a sponsor of the USNS Lansing, the first naval vessel named for Michigan's capital city. This distinction permanently links Lansing to the Navy's mission of national defense and global security. "Michigan is the Arsenal of Democracy. We build what America needs to defend itself," Chairwoman McClain said . "Having Lansing's name sail the seas in service to our country is a powerful reminder that Michigan will always stand shoulder to shoulder with the men and women who defend our freedom. I am deeply grateful to all who will serve on this ship - now and into the future - and remain humbled by the honor of being named as her sponsor." Chairwoman McClain was named a sponsor alongside Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer. Ship sponsors traditionally serve as a symbol of good luck and protection for the vessel and all who sail aboard her. That connection endures throughout the ship's entire service life, reinforcing the personal and historical significance of the role. The USNS Lansing is a Spearhead-class Expeditionary Fast Transport, designed to rapidly move personnel, equipment, and medical capabilities in support of U.S. military and humanitarian missions around the world. The ship is currently designated to be crewed by 31 civilian mariners and is capable of embarking up to 155 embarked forces, or an Expeditionary Medical Unit as required.
